DIY Round House Lessons
Few lessons learned as we build an offgrid house:
- DIY means nothing happens if you do nothing. We had a break on the movement of the property once the rafters got up. Between the holidays, my works schedule and hockey …. nothing and I mean nothing moved on the property. The bummer part of a Do It Yourself project - if you do nothing, nothing happens.
- Heights and pitch are not my thing. The mental element within my head for survival is high. So when I thought I could rig in and get out on the pitched rafters to help, that is a solid nope. I am grateful my husband found the courage to do it and I could just dangle out of the scissor lift helping. This appears like it would be simple but survival instincts are real.
- Cleaning up after every visit to the house makes for a delightful return. The organization of the wood, tools and area sure make the return to the space easy.
- I love the concrete floors and can’t wait to see them finished and ready. I envision fuzzy rugs and lots of ‘lime washed’ looking floors with quartz filled spalling.
- Finding unique elements to include in the house are key. When you build a round house, you just can’t have square features. There are so many creative items for your house if you start looking.
- I can back up a trailer and do it well! Thanks to my Dad’s trick … I watched my husband do it a handful of times getting mad and frustrated that I thought ‘give me a shot’ and I totally rocked it! I am a great “parallel parker” and now trailer backer upper! Skills baby!
